STOP DEFORESTATION on Cairns mountains!

STOP DEFORESTATION on Cairns mountains!

The issue

It's important to know that deforestation is not just an environmental issue but a world issue that can and will be life threatening to us all whether you're a human, animal or tree. Forests cover around 30% of our planets land, so it's a shame to hear that we lose an estimate of 18 acres of Earth's forests each year. At this rate, we will basically have no forests around the year of 2100 which should be a huge wake up call. It is cruial to why deforestion must be talked more about and stopped as forest loss plays a huge role in climate change aswell. Trees, forest plants and soils store huge amounts of carbon. When our forests are cut, the powerful carbon that was stored is now useless. Studies also show that forest loss goes beyond carbon causing warming locally, regionally and globally, changing the waterfall by altering movement of water and heat. 15% of all greenhouse gas emissions are the result of deforestation. Although, there is no huge threat to our wildlife or rainforests here in tropical Cairns, Queensland Australia, that is no reason to try to prevent even hearing the slightest risk of deforestation and degradation from happening in the present and future to come. Deforestation in tropical rainforests are a particular worry as they are home to most of the worlds biodiversity which is why we have to protect our rainforests like our lives depend on it. These are some of the reasons why I have felt no choice but to start a petition to STOP DEFORESTATION starting small with our beautiful, green mountains here in Cairns. It is saddening to see how many trees we lose just to replace them with houses to be built further and further up our mountains.

It seems like people only want to start making a change in the world when things are getting worse and need attention. Why can't we take a stand now when we know deforestation is taking place in the world and the impact it has? Is it not that important that governments, councils, companies and we as the community, the people to worry about?
