Stop Deforestation in Assam, Choose an alternative for the Highway Construction
The Issue
We, concerned citizens and nature lovers, are deeply troubled by the large-scale felling of trees to widen National Highways in Assam. Recent reports reveal that more than 3,000 trees, including some that are over 300 years old, are at risk of being cut down for this project. This is occurring simultaneously with the launch of the Amrit Briksha Abhijan, which aims to plant over 1 crore commercial trees across the state.
After the felling of 293 heritage trees on the Dharapur-Pathsala Road and 710,000 trees on the Chaaygaon-Goalpara Road, the Assam government is now planning to cut down these ancient trees along National Highway 515 from Kulajan to Jonai in Dhemaji district. This action is a direct threat to our environment and the local ecosystem.
We urge the authorities to reconsider and halt the felling of these trees. We believe in a balance between development and environmental preservation. We request alternative solutions, such as planning the road construction around these vital trees. The ecological balance, carbon absorption, habitat provision for wildlife, and soil erosion prevention that these trees offer are invaluable.
We call upon Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma to direct the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to immediately stop the felling of trees on National Highway 515. We implore him to expand the highway without sacrificing these ancient trees, which are essential for the well-being of our environment.
The removal of these trees not only endangers the environment but also affects the stability of the National Highway. In the scorching summer, these trees provide shelter and shade to countless vehicles, and their aesthetic appeal attracts visitors. We believe that a collective voice of residents who deeply care about our environment must be heard.
We request an immediate investigation to assess the situation and take appropriate actions to protect these trees. Your action on this matter will be greatly appreciated.
