Stop Deep-Sea Mining before it’s too late
The Issue
Right now, companies like The Metals Company are racing to strip-mine the ocean floor for metals used in our phones, cars, and wind turbines.
They’re targeting hydrothermal vents—home to species found nowhere else on Earth—and ancient ecosystems we’ve barely explored. The damage is irreversible: toxic plumes will smother marine life, stored carbon could be released (worsening climate change), and fishing communities face food shortages. All for short-term corporate profits.
Indigenous communities in the Pacific, coastal villages worldwide, and future generations are all at risk. The ocean produces 50% of our oxygen and regulates our climate—if we let it become a mine, we’re destroying the systems that keep us alive.We demand a global moratorium on deep-sea mining until it’s proven safe, tech giants like Google, Apple, Samsung, Microsoft, BMW, Tesla, and Volkswagen to commit to 100% recycled metals by 2030, governments and the International Seabed Authority to ban mining contracts, and banks like BlackRock, Deutsche Bank, and Allianz to divest from deep-sea mining companies. I refuse to let the ocean become a mine. I’ve seen the beauty of hydrothermal vents, the magic of bioluminescent fish, and the life-giving power of the sea. But if we don’t act now, these wonders will be bulldozed for profit. I care because I want future generations to see a healthy ocean—not a wasteland. And I know we can stop this if we act together.
If we win, the ocean’s deep-sea ecosystems are protected, food security is safe, and our climate stays stable. If we lose, unique species go extinct, fish stocks collapse, and the ocean becomes a corporate sacrifice zone.
