Stop Davis Elementary from closing!

The Issue

Davis Elementary serves a beloved community of both mixed hearing and Deaf and Hard of Hearing children. It serves as the local community elementary, but also as the Regional Day School Program for the Deaf for early childhood and elementary ages. The children in this school do not distinguish each other as separate groups, but as one community of diverse students that have grown together. Deaf and Hard of Hearing children often face obstacles of language deprivation, barriers to communication, isolation, bullying, and left without appropriate accommodations to support their success. This is not the case at Davis. It is a well-educated community of Teachers of the Deaf, interpreters, paraprofessionals, administrators, and mainstream teachers that have grown to become knowledgeable and passionate about teaching DHH students among their hearing peers. Hearing children in Davis are kind, connected, supportive off their Deaf peers and often learn some sign language themselves. By splitting Davis up you are not only tearing a united community apart, but you are also placing the DHH students into a new environment in which the teachers and staff have no knowledge or experience in teaching Deaf children, how to work with interpreters, how to provide their needed accommodations, how to assess their needs or progress, or how to support parents in their child’s educational journey. The learning curve that would exist in this instance places a giant burden on our Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. Plano ISD needs to reconsider Davis Elementary being shutdown because of it’s potentially detrimental impact on the RDSPD as a whole- Deaf staff and Deaf students especially impacted.
