Stop Data Centers Coming to Upstate, SC

Stop Data Centers Coming to Upstate, SC
The Issue
We, the undersigned community, and the State of South Carolina, strongly oppose the future development(s) of data centers in our community. We have concern over the three centers currently in progress or pending vote for Spartanburg and Cherokee County residents.
These data centers are a threat to our local infrastructure, consuming enough energy to power a medium- sized city. There is community concern on how these centers will affect our environment when it comes to water usage, air pollution, and how these emissions will be removed so they do not cause harm to the surrounding community.
We urge our representatives to carefully consider these impacts and explore alternative locations that do not impose such risks on residential communities and conservation efforts.
We call on the Spartanburg County Council, Cherokee County Council, and the State of South Carolina to:
-Call for a moratorium on data centers in progress or pending vote until adequate regulations can be enacted to fully protect our communities, our environment, and our health.
-Host a Public Forum separate from the County Council Meetings to provide the community and their representatives a chance to have a discussion on the community concerns. Providing details on how this will impact our power grid, water infrastructure, and the surrounding communities. Also, providing clarification on how emissions into the air or water will be facilitated and monitored.
Please join us in urging our local government officials to reconsider moving forward with the data center projects and protecting our natural resources, preserving a healthy community, and quality of life for all members of the community. The next generations deserve to grow up in a community where safety and health are not sacrificed for the sake of corporate profits.
