The Issue

I have lived in Gaines County most of my  life, and I cherish the simplicity and natural beauty of our community. Recently, I learned about a proposal to build a large data centre here, and I am deeply concerned about the impact this could have on our precious water resources. Data centers are known to consume enormous amounts of water for their cooling processes, and our county simply doesn't have water to spare.

Data centers often use millions of gallons of water each day to keep their equipment cool. For example, a typical large data center can use between 300,000 and 500,000 gallons of water per day! Considering that Gainesville County is already struggling with limited water resources, this development could jeopardize our community's access to water for essential uses like agriculture and household purposes.

Moreover, the economic benefits that proponents claim these data centers bring often don't balance the long-term environmental and social costs borne by local communities. The jobs they provide rarely match the numbers required for a sustainable benefit any longer term viability meanwhile risking our most critical resource: water.

To put things into perspective, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor, vast parts of Texas, including our area, are already experiencing moderate to severe drought conditions. Every drop counts, and we cannot afford to have our limited water diverted to support massive data centres at the expense of our local economy and environment.

Instead, we should be exploring sustainable technology solutions and pushing for data center designs that employ air-cooled systems or other water-saving technologies. The technology exists today to balance digital progress with environmental conservation, and it's up to us to ensure these sustainable measures are prioritized.

I urge the county officials to reconsider the approval of this data center and demand that companies build in resource-conscious ways. We must demand responsible technological expansion that doesn't jeopardize the well-being of our community or its natural resources.

Please join me in protecting Gaines County's water. Sign this petition to stop the proposed data centre development until sustainable solutions are prioritized.
