The Issue

My family and I have called Willis, Texas our home for generations. It's a place where the community still cherishes nature, values clean air, and treasures the simple pleasures of living in a closely-knit community. However, the looming construction of data centers in our area threatens to disrupt this way of life. Not only will it change the landscape we know and love, but it will impose a lasting impact on our natural resources and the well-being of generations to come.

Data centers are notorious for being major consumers of water and electricity. The introduction of such facilities in Willis could strain our local power grid, increase our water usage significantly, and potentially lead to environmental degradation. According to a 2020 U.S. Department of Energy report, data centers account for about 1% of GLOBAL electricity usage – that's more than some countries consume.

Moreover, the constant need for cooling systems in these centers poses a threat to the water supply. A single data center can consume up to 3-5 million gallons of water a day, which may redirect water resources away from our community needs such as drinking and agriculture.

To protect our precious resources and maintain the quality of life in our community, we urgently need a moratorium on the construction of data centers in Willis. Corporate accountability is integral; the companies behind these projects must be held responsible for their environmental impact before laying a single brick.

Our goal is clear. We urge Montgomery County officials to impose a temporary halt on these projects until comprehensive environmental impact assessments are conducted and the corporations involved commit to sustainable operational practices. Let’s prioritize the well-being of our community over unchecked industrial growth.

Please sign this petition to show your support for our cause and help us safeguard the future of Willis, Texas, and its beloved residents. Together, we can make a difference.
