The Issue

I’m a junior at Long Island City High School, and on Friday, September 18th, we faced unexpected random metal detector scanning. That day, I missed 30 minutes of my first-period college course, an essential part of my education. Now, Chancellor Kamal H. Samuels wants to implement these scanners every day. This decision not only affects my learning but also disrupts the daily routine of every student at our school.

Metal detector scanning is perceived as a security measure, but its daily implementation comes at a steep cost to our educational environment. The time lost waiting in long lines for scanning directly eats into our valuable class time, hindering our ability to learn effectively. Studies show that such measures often create anxiety and stress rather than fostering a safe environment. Rather than promoting a sense of security, constant scanning implies a lack of trust in the student body.

Moreover, data suggests that the presence of constant security checks can contribute to a hostile learning atmosphere. According to a 2013 National Center for Education Statistics report, schools with regular metal detector screenings reported higher levels of student unrest and lower levels of student attendance. Instead of introducing daily disruption, why not explore alternative measures that ensure safety without compromising education? Increasing staff presence during crucial times, fostering community engagement, and integrating conflict resolution programs have shown success in building truly safe educational spaces.

Our focus should be on creating an open, positive environment that facilitates learning and safety. We can achieve this by promoting dialogue between students, teachers, and administration about effective safety measures and maintaining our school's supportive educational atmosphere.

It's vital for the future of our education that we prioritize efficient learning over convenient security measures that serve little beyond formality. Let’s protect our right to an uninterrupted and effective education. Join me in urging Chancellor Kamal H. Samuels to reconsider daily metal detector scanning at Long Island City High School. We can work together to find better solutions that ensure safety while preserving the quality of our educational experience.
