The level of abuse aimed at Cyclists and Active Travel campaigners is highly worrying. 

If it were any other group with a shared characteristic it would be classed as discrimination/hate crime. 

Cyclists need the protection of such classification as at present they are insulted, trolled and attacked across social media, including their families and businesses. 

Left unchecked this hatred transfers to our roads as verbal abuse, thrown items and intimidating driving such as close/punishment passes, pushing in front etc, cyclists’ safety secondary to saving seconds.

This may in part be due to recent Highway Code revisions, granting pedestrians and cyclists greater rights, ironically to rebalance vulnerability vs potential to cause harm.

Also Governmental ‘Gear Change’ policy is funding Councils to promote safer walking and cycling provision, resented by some motorists.

Cycling is fantastic for health and wellbeing, promotes independence and develops mindful road users. 

Above all Cycling reduces both traffic congestion and pollution, both huge and increasing issues.

Most of the hatred online/on roads isn’t due to a cyclist’s personal actions but general hatred against the body of cyclists. 

Current legislation is weak at tackling trolling/intimidation.  Hopefully a Discrimination classification would deter much of it at source.
