Stop Cultural Appropriation of Indigenous Attires: Cultural Sensitivity Matters
The Issue
The Issue of Cultural Appropriation
The improper wear of indigenous attire has become a pressing concern in Baguio City, as it perpetuates cultural appropriation and disrespects the rich heritage of native communities. Not only the tribes within the Cordilleran Region are affected with this issue, but native Filipino tribes and Indigenous groups in the Philippines are related to these cultural appropriations. Indigenous youth are also affected, feeling disconnection from their roots as they witness their cultural heritage being disrespected.
The Indigenous people are not limiting the use of their cultural attires to the public, but they also do want respect each time an individual uses one. If this issue of improper wear would not be resolved, then the future generation will adapt the wrong tradition without understanding the sacred meaning of their culture. Homogenization is also a disadvantage of this concern where the blending of cultures can sometimes result in the loss of traditional practices and cultural identities. That is why preserving the cultural heritage means a lot to indigenous people because it can be essential for maintaining cultural identities and heritage. Staying the same can be beneficial and can be a deliberate act of resistance to cultural appropriation. It can signify a community's determination to preserve and protect their overall tradition.
Now is the time to act, for a lot of social media influencers are wearing Cordilleran attires improperly. Wearing a bahag/wanes should only be for men and the tapis for women. Another recent issue is the famous social media personality mocking, doing animal noices while wearing the attire and making fun of the cordilleran bahag as if it is a normal clothing that is being disrespected.
Cultural Appropriation not only erases the historical and cultural significance of these garments but also contributes to the ongoing marginalization of indigenous people. It is essential that we prioritize cultural sensitivity, education, and respect, ensuring that indigenous attire is worn and represented in a responsible and respectful manner.
