Stop Conway data centers from draining our water resources
The Issue
Conway, Arkansas, once known for its lush landscapes and pristine water resources, now faces an urgent threat. Data centers, including TechZone and CloudHub, are intensifying their presence in our community, leading to excessive usage of our precious water supply. As a resident, I have witnessed firsthand the detrimental effects this has had on our environment. Our creeks are drying up, and the levels in Cadron Creek, once a thriving ecosystem, have visibly depleted.
Water is a vital resource, not only for us but for future generations. Access to clean and adequate water should remain a fundamental right for every resident in Conway. The rapid expansion of these data centers is something many locals did not anticipate, yet they are bearing the brunt of its consequences. It's imperative that we take action now before the situation becomes irreversible.
Data centers are known to consume vast amounts of water, particularly in the cooling processes of their servers. According to reports, a single data center can use up to 1 million gallons of water per day during peak times. This level of consumption significantly impacts our water table levels and disrupts local supply.
Conway must prioritize sustainable practices for all businesses operating within its borders. The city’s officials need to impose stricter regulations regarding water usage for industrial purposes and explore alternative cooling technologies that are water-efficient. Companies must be encouraged to adopt innovative solutions such as air-cooling systems or recycled water cooling. By enforcing such regulations, we will ensure that our water sources are safeguarded for essential uses, like drinking and agriculture.
The city council and local environmental agencies must be urged to conduct a thorough environmental impact assessment of current and future data center operations in Conway. Citizens need reassurances that expansions do not come at the expense of our natural resources.
Let us come together as a community to demand change. Sign this petition to urge our local government and data center operators to take immediate action to safeguard Conway's water resources. Together, we can make a difference and ensure the preservation of our beloved environment for all who call Conway home. Please sign to make your voice heard.
