Grocery stores have long rejected perfectly good fruits and vegetables because they think consumers won’t eat produce that is funny looking, or “ugly.” In total, U.S. grocers toss nearly 26% of all produce before it even reaches their stores due mostly to strict, self-imposed cosmetic standards. This means billions of pounds of good, healthy produce going uneaten each year solely on the basis of looks!

Kroger is America’s largest grocery store chain and the fifth largest retailer in the world. Last year, it saw a jaw-dropping $103 billion in profits. This is a company so large, it has the power to change the way the grocery industry behaves. And that’s why I am asking it to take the lead in changing the way we market and provide produce in America.

Join me in asking Kroger, America’s largest grocer, to commit to selling “ugly” produce to help reduce waste and make fruits and vegetables more affordable for those who need it most.

Grocery stores in Europe, Australia, and Canada have started selling ugly fruits and vegetables, often at a discounted price, and have seen increases in store traffic and total sales. Selling ugly produce could also help farmers, who are forced to toss perfectly good fruit simply because grocers won’t buy the uglies. It could also help the millions of American families living in poverty by bringing down the cost of produce.

Selling ugly produce is not only good business, it will also save precious water. Water spent to grow "cosmetically less than perfect” produce will not be wasted. In the age of severe droughts like the one in California, water conservation is an extremely high priority.

Today, one out of seven Americans is food insecure, and the number is even higher when you include those families who are produce-deficient. With statistics like these, it is irresponsible for these grocers to waste good, healthy and perfectly edible food. By selling ugly fruits and vegetables, more people can afford healthy produce.

Please support this campaign and ask Kroger to be part of the solution. Sign my petition and tell Kroger to sell ugly fruit and vegetables.
