Boeing used the Ram-Air System to provide ventilation in their early Boeing 707 aircraft. This system took fresh air from outside without it being drawn through the aircraft engines (similar to today’s Boeing 787 aircraft).
Why did they change to the Bleed-Air system which utilises the engines to draw in the air, when they already knew about the dangers of contaminated air entering the aircraft cabin and WHY did Airbus and other aircraft manufacturers follow suit?
Was that decision based on cost because of fuel efficiency?
Why did aircraft manufacturers knowingly choose to put human health at risk?
Fast forward to 2020 in the midst of a Coronavirus pandemic:
Interview with Jean-Brice Dumont, Head Of Engineering at Airbus on the subject of Cabin Air:
https://www.pscp.tv/w/1YqKDEZYOeNGV
Mr Dumont begins the interview by stating that half of the air is ‘FRESH AIR DRAWN FROM OUTSIDE’. He conveniently omits the fact that the air is drawn in through the aircraft engines and becomes contaminated with toxic chemicals from aircraft oil, hydraulic fluid and (when aircraft are on the ground) exhaust from other aircraft and ground service vehicles.
This air is not filtered before it is supplied to the aircraft cockpit and passenger cabin.
He goes on to state Airbus aircraft have HEPA filters which are ‘Super Efficient’ and that the air is replaced every 2-3 minutes.

This explains exactly why claims made by Airbus and the aviation industry are very misleading:

It’s very unfortunate that the aviation industry made the decision to deny that the contaminated air in aircraft is harmful to human health and that there are no long-term health effects - rather than do the right thing - address the problem and work to find innovative solutions to put a stop to it.
It’s also very unfortunate they now claim the air onboard aircraft is ‘FRESH AND CLEAN’ and that HEPA filters and the ventilation systems onboard stop the spread of viruses.
It’s also unfortunate that airlines have cut back on maintenance in order to reduce costs and maximise profits.
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction - Newton.
