Tomorrow at 6:30 pm: Perris votes on a citywide data center ban

Tomorrow, the Perris City Council takes its first vote on a citywide ban on data centers. Here are two things you can do this week.

1. Speak up at tomorrow’s council meeting, in person or by Zoom

When and where: Tuesday, Oct 13, 6:30 pm, Perris City Hall, 101 North D Street. It’s a full agenda (the warehouse moratorium is also up), so plan for a long evening.

Read the posted agenda ahead of time. The data center ban is item 11.A. The full agenda packet, including the ordinance text, is on the city’s meetings page.

Come early if you want to speak. Fill out a speaker card (often a blue sheet) and hand it to the City Clerk before your item comes up. It’s the surest way to be called. If you want to speak at both times below, ask the clerk whether you need a card for each.

What to say:

Early in the meeting, during public comment: ask the council to put a letter to the fair board on a future agenda.
When the data center ban comes up (item 11.A, the first public hearing), supporters speak first: support the ban as written, and ask the council to confirm it covers any data center, whatever it’s called and whatever its size.
Comments can be cut from three minutes to one if many people sign up, so bring a one-sentence version.

Can’t come in person? Join by Zoom:

Online: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/83270967568 (webinar ID 832 7096 7568). Use the Raise Hand button when you want to speak.
By phone: call +1 669 444 9171, enter the webinar ID, then press *9 to raise your hand and *6 to unmute when called. Other phone numbers are on the posted agenda.
Join a few minutes early, and raise your hand when the mayor calls for public comment or for speakers in favor of item 11.A.
2. Email the fair board by Wednesday, Oct 14

The ban can’t reach the Lake Perris Fairgrounds, which is state land outside city limits. The fair board can, and it meets Oct 28. Ask it to put ending its agreement with the company on that agenda. The email is ready at SaveLakePerris.com: add your city and one sentence of your own, then send. It takes about two minutes and counts wherever you live.

Nothing has been approved. The board signed a nonbinding agreement to study the idea, and either side can end it with 30 days’ notice.
