Stop Conflict of Interest on Port Moody City Council

Stop Conflict of Interest on Port Moody City Council
The Issue
Port Moody City Council is set to approve an unprecedented tower development, despite strong public opposition.
Is the decision being made fairly, or is there a potential conflict of interest at play?
Conflict of Interest?
Councillor Diana Dilworth, who has served six terms on Port Moody City Council, has worked full-time since 2020 as the Director of Government Relations for the Home Builders Association of Vancouver (HAVAN). In her role, Councillor Dilworth is a registered lobbyist in British Columbia.
Councillor Dilworth has consistently voted in favour of development projects proposed by HAVAN members—clients she is paid to lobby on behalf of. Additionally, she has actively advocated for provincial legislation that would significantly increase high-density development in Port Moody, directly benefiting the HAVAN members she represents professionally.
Is This a Violation of the Law?
Does this create an inherent risk for Port Moody? The public deserves clarity.
Despite the clear potential for a conflict of interest, Port Moody City Council has yet to take action to investigate these concerns or ensure the integrity of our local government.
Our Request to Port Moody City Council
We, the undersigned, call on Port Moody City Council to take the following actions:
- Formally request that Councillor Dilworth recuse herself from all votes related to development proposals from HAVAN members.
- If Councillor Dilworth refuses to recuse herself, the City Council should formally request her resignation.
Request for an Independent Inquiry
Additionally, we request that the BC Ombudsperson conduct a full inquiry into the potential conflict of interest posed by Councillor Dilworth’s role as a lobbyist for HAVAN while serving on City Council, to ensure transparency and public trust in this critical decision-making process.
