The Issue

Keep California State Beaches Ad-Free. California’s state beaches are some of the few public places where people can step away from traffic, screens, noise, and the constant stream of commercial messaging that surrounds everyday life.

Families, veterans, surfers, tourists, seniors, and local residents come to the coast for recreation, reflection, and the experience of being somewhere that still feels natural.

Commercial banner-towing aircraft change that experience. Even while sitting on a public beach and looking out over the ocean, visitors can still be confronted with large advertisements moving across the horizon.

Aerial advertising is still relatively limited today, which is exactly why now is the right time to address it. If the practice becomes more common, what is occasional today could become a normal part of the beach experience tomorrow.

We should not wait until the sky above our beaches becomes another crowded advertising space before deciding that something valuable has been lost.

This is not about one company, one advertisement, or one message. It is about protecting the character of California’s public coastline and keeping California State Beaches ad-free.

We are asking California lawmakers and appropriate state agencies to pursue a restriction on commercial aerial advertising over or immediately adjacent to California State Beaches and coastal State Parks.

There are already countless places for commercial advertising.

California State Beaches should remain ad-free places where we can look toward the horizon and simply take in the beauty of this amazing state !
