The Issue

For over 30 years, Combe Pafford School in Torquay has been a beacon of hope for children with moderate learning difficulties (MLD). Over these decades, it has established a strong community, providing essential education and support for students who often struggle to find a place that truly understands and caters to their unique needs. Presently, Combe Pafford supports 257 pupils, all thriving in an environment specifically designed for them. Additionally, the school's long waiting lists are testament to the overwhelming demand and importance of its services.

However, an imminent decision by the Department of Education and Torbay Council threatens to strip this community of its core focus. The proposed shift to autism spectrum condition (ASC) as the school's primary need will leave children requiring support for MLD without a local alternative. This decision does not just relocate services; it potentially displaces hundreds of children and their families who heavily rely on the current structure Combe Pafford offers.

The transformation of Combe Pafford into an ASC provision doesn't account for the considerable gap it will leave for children with moderate learning difficulties. While we recognize the need for ASC support, it should not come at the expense of another vulnerable group losing its lifeline.

In light of this, we urge the Department of Education and Torbay Council to reconsider this decision. Instead of altering the function of an already essential service, let's push for the creation of new provisions for children with ASC, ensuring both groups receive the attention and environment they so deserve.

Our children depend on us to safeguard their education and development. Let us stand united in our plea to preserve the legacy and mission of Combe Pafford School in Torquay while seeking inclusive solutions through new opportunities for ASC support.

Sign this petition today and help us ensure Combe Pafford School continues its mission of supporting children with moderate learning difficulties.
