The Issue

In the heart of Sulphur, LA, our homes provide more than mere shelter. They are spaces where we nurture our families, foster community ties, celebrate milestones, and create memories that last a lifetime. The recent proposal to construct an underground CO2 pipeline in our neighborhood, threading through just within a mile of hundreds of homes, churches, schools, and businesses, poses a significant threat to the safety and serenity we cherish.

CO2 pipelines can have detrimental impacts on the local environment and pose significant safety risks. According to studies conducted by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), pipelines transporting carbon dioxide under high pressure can rupture, potentially leading to hazardous leaks. In 2020 alone, the United States saw 649 significant pipeline incidents, underscoring the potential hazards right at our doorstep.

Our neighborhoods feature bustling schools filled with children, churches serving as the moral backbone, and businesses that form the livelihood of our community members. The proximity of such a potentially dangerous system could affect the health and safety of our families and compromise the local economic stability.

As recent as April 3, 2024 – Sulphur, Louisiana: Exxon-operated CO₂ pipeline leaked ~2,548 barrels; highlighted emergency response and monitoring gaps!

It is understandable that development and infrastructural advancements are essential, but they must not come at the expense of community safety and welfare. Environmentally conscious alternatives and safer paths for such projects should be thoroughly explored to prevent unnecessary risks to populated areas.

We urge decision-makers to reconsider the pipeline's route and prioritize the lives and safety of Sulphur's residents. Keeping such projects away from densely populated neighborhoods safeguards not just our present but paves a safer future for generations to come.

Help us protect Sulphur's neighborhoods, its residents, and the intrinsic fabric of our daily lives by signing this petition to halt the proposed CO2 pipeline proposed by Low Carbon Logistics CCS Transport LLC, a subsidiary of ExxonMobil Pipeline Company LLC.

Thank you
