The Issue

Petition to Hyderabad's city authorities: let us share the Necklace Road, even during marathons!

I am a devoted pet owner and each Sunday brings a moment of joy and social interaction to my furry friend at the local dog park. But lately, our Sundays have turned into a gamble. My dog only has three hours a week to hang out with his pals, yet this cherished routine often gets disrupted by marathons closing the Necklace Road to commuters like us. This year alone, there have been over 30 runs, blocking more than half of our weekends for commuting purposes.

The Necklace Road is not just a path for running events, it's a lifeline for numerous activities. It serves as a haven for those who, like me, enjoy cycling, leisurely walks, playful days with pets, and the simple pleasure of carting our families around town without unnecessary hassle. By closing the entire road, we are effectively shutting down other vibrant uses that bring happiness and health to our community.

We recognize the importance of fitness events, yet advocate for a solution that allows co-existence. A compromise we've considered is allocating half of the Necklace Road for events and preserving the other half for commuting and public use. Implementing this change would not only accommodate runners and fitness enthusiasts but also cater to the recreational needs of other residents, ensuring the environmental balance is maintained between different leisure activities.

Furthermore, it is important to highlight the impact on local businesses. Shops, cafes, and food stalls that rely on the weekend footfall also suffer when the roads are completely closed. By allowing partial access, we can ensure these establishments continue to thrive, offering a full, dynamic experience for both locals and tourists alike.

We need to find a harmonious solution that respects all users of the Necklace Road, be it fitness fans, pet owners, families, or local business operators. This call for balance and fairness will benefit everyone who cherishes this communal space.

Join me in making this a reality. Sign the petition to urge our city officials to consider partial road closures, preserving public access while supporting community events. Let's reclaim mutual enjoyment of our beloved Necklace Road!
