Stop clear cutting in Monogahela National Forest
The Issue
Monogahela National Forest, particularly the Shavers Real Planning Area, holds a special significance for me and my family. Our camp, nestled within this vast forest, offers a sanctuary from the modern entanglements of technology and the relentless heat of nearby areas. Due to its dense canopy, the forest maintains temperatures 8 to 10 degrees cooler than the nearby town of Elkins. It is a refuge for those like me who suffer from hypersensitivity to electromagnetic fields (EMF), caused by power lines and cell towers. This forest, devoid of such disturbances, provides a rare and irreplaceable environment where I can truly find relief.
However, the threat of clear cutting looms large over this serene sanctuary. The proposed logging in the Monogahela National Forest’s Shavers Real Planning Area threatens not only the peace and personal health solutions for hypersensitivity sufferers like myself, but it also poses a broader environmental risk. Forests play a crucial role in regulating local climates. The deliberate removal of trees will result in increased air temperatures, disrupting the delicate climate balance and leading to stronger storms and persistent droughts. The prospects of such drastic environmental changes also extend to heightened flooding risks as the natural absorption capacity of the forest watersheds is compromised.
Furthermore, the loss of this unique ecosystem threatens wildlife that depend on these habitats for survival. According to the United States Forest Service, Monogahela National Forest is home to diverse species, many of which depend directly on its rich hardwoods and varied habitat structures. As stewards of the environment, it is our responsibility to protect these ecosystems from irreversible damage.
There are viable alternatives to clear cutting that can preserve both the ecological integrity of the forest and the health benefits for individuals dependent on it. Sustainable forest management practices such as selective logging, controlled undergrowth burning, and reforestation can maintain the economic benefits without devastating the environment.
We urge the local and federal authorities to reconsider the current logging plans in the Shavers Real Planning Area. Protecting this forest is essential not only for preserving its beauty and ecological balance but also for ensuring that individuals like myself continue to have access to a peaceful, EMF-free environment. Let us safeguard this vital natural resource for ourselves, our communities, and future generations.
