The Issue

Every child deserves a childhood filled with love, learning, and laughter – not the burdens of adult responsibilities forced upon them. In Sri Lanka, a growing number of cases have emerged where children are being ordained in temples without their informed consent or understanding. This sacred practice, meant to be a conscious and voluntary spiritual journey, has been twisted into a tool that violates the rights and wellbeing of children.

Numerous reports of child abuse within temple walls have surfaced, painting a grim picture of what many young boys endure under the guise of religious tradition. Not only are these children thrust into a life they have not chosen, but the environment in which they reside often lacks the oversight families and authorities would consider necessary to ensure their safety and development.

Child ordination, conducted without adequate consideration of the mental, emotional, and physical maturity of these young individuals, strips away their right to a future of their own making. Instead of exploring the world and growing into their unique passions and talents, these children are subjected to a narrow path predetermined by others.

We call upon the government of Sri Lanka, religious leaders, and child rights organizations to address this issue urgently. Implement strong measures to protect children from entering into ordination without comprehensive consent protocols. Introduce policies that safeguard the rights of minors, ensuring any religious involvement is voluntary and appropriate for their age and comprehension.

We also encourage the education of communities about the implications of child ordination, highlighting the critical need for parental involvement and child advocacy in these religious practices.

Join us in voicing the need for change. Protect the innocence and potential of every child in Sri Lanka by signing this petition. Children deserve the opportunity to play, learn, and grow in safe and nurturing environments.
