The Issue

Living in a beautiful conservation zone in Hillingdon , we pride ourselves on maintaining the abundant greenery that surrounds us. Regularly engaging In activities such as pruning, cutting, and nurturing the environment, we utilize the natural compost to ensure the continued growth and health of our gardens. Until now, the service for collecting garden bags has been an integral part of our community upkeep, supporting our efforts without extra financial burden. However, with the introduction of charges for garden bag collection commencing next month, we find this change not only disappointing but also unjust.

We already contribute a significant amount through council tax to support local services and infrastructure. It seems unreasonable and unfair that separate charges should now be introduced for a service that is vital to maintaining the conservation area. This unexpected additional expense poses a strain on our budgets, potentially compromising our ability to preserve the greenery that is so essential to the character and environment of hillingdon.

There must be a reconsideration of this decision to charge for garden waste collection. Instead of discouraging maintenance, there should be support in the form of complimentary services that encourage more residents to actively participate in looking after their gardens. Switching to a chargeless model for garden waste collection would ensure that residents can continue their efforts in preserving our town's vibrant nature.

The cost of waste collection, including garden waste, is already covered by the Council Tax we pay.

What the council is doing now is adding an extra charge , this additional charge increases our financial burden and should not be imposed.

People who do not want to pay extra after paying high council tax will dump their garden waste somewhere else and this would make our borough next to the most busiest airport of Europe Heathrow look shabby and this would further encourage other services like bin collection, recycling and food waste collections to impose charges eventually which would be a shame!

Many of the properties on these streets have gardens that border council-managed green spaces. Residents here have long taken on the responsibility of clearing fallen leaves, branches, invasive weeds, wild berries, and tree seeds coming from these adjacent council lands. This has significantly increased the maintenance work for residents, despite the fact that these issues are not caused by us and are not our responsibility. Introducing an additional charge for garden waste collection under these circumstances is, frankly, unfair and unreasonable.

Maintaining Hillingdon’s unique natural beauty should be a communal effort, supported by council services rather than hindered by additional charges. Let us urge the Hillingdon Council to reconsider this policy change and revert garden bag collection to a free service. Sign this petition to send a strong message to our local council that such changes impact our community and environment, making it clear that our natural environment should always be prioritized and nurtured.
