Stop Censorship of Fine Arts in Keller ISD

Stop Censorship of Fine Arts in Keller ISD
The Issue
As parents of children actively participating in the Fine Arts programs of Keller ISD, we are alarmed by the sudden increase in censorship of the theatre departments across the district. Our kids have been flourishing in their creative pursuits under these programs; however, the recent intervention from the superintendent and the superintendent's cabinet has drastically affected their development and growth.
This August, a new procedure was put into place where every play and musical, no matter if already approved by campus and the Fine Arts administration, is now additionally subject to review by the superintendent, Tracy Johnson, or her cabinet. This extra layer of scrutiny has led to countless denials, often with vague or no reasons provided, which is severely affecting our kids' ability to express themselves and learn. Denials have included works of art that have been as performed in Keller ISD as recent as the Spring of 2024. Denied titles have included Artemesia, Yellow Boat, Ruthless and Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime.
KISD theatre departments have long been known for their success at producing thought-provoking content that is appropriate for high school students. These departments encourage open thoughts, stimulate discussions, and leave lasting impressions that education ought to. Fine Arts should give rise to critical thinking rather than imposing needless restrictions on creativity. Therefore, we call upon all parents, students, educators, and concerned parties to lend their voice to this issue. Let's stand together and push back against excessive censorship that is hampering the otherwise successful and influential Fine Arts programs. Sign the petition to support a thriving, unencumbered environment for creative expression in our schools
