Stop Cell Phone Ban at Kuna High

The Issue

INVAILDATED DUE TO FAKE NAMES!!! The plan now is to have a paper version so we can actually supervise who is signing the petition. If you would like to sign the new paper petition, we will be putting it out there soon. I am LaKota Everts and anyone that wants to help out on this is welcome, just speak to me please. I am aware of some seniors that are already going to work on the paper copy and I would like to speak to you guys about that.

The Kuna School District’s decision to ban phones for all students starting next semester, though well-intentioned, overlooks the vital role that smartphones play in keeping families connected. While the policy may be aimed at minimizing distractions and preventing inappropriate use, it fails to recognize that phones are no longer just tools for entertainment—they are essential for communication between students and their families.

For many families, especially those with busy schedules or parents who work during school hours, the ability to contact their child quickly and efficiently is critical. Plans change, school events get canceled, or emergencies arise—parents need to have access to their child during the school day. A blanket ban on phones fails to take into account the varying needs of families and students who rely on this immediate communication.

Rather than implementing a complete phone ban, a more targeted approach should be considered. Addressing inappropriate phone use and setting clear guidelines for responsible use would allow for students to continue having access to this important tool without disrupting their educational experience. The district should focus on holding accountable those who misuse phones, rather than imposing collective punishment on all students.

As this new policy is set to take effect after the upcoming Christmas break, now is the time for concerned parents, students, and community members to voice their opposition. We encourage the school board to reconsider this decision and explore alternative solutions that balance the need for focus in the classroom with the necessity of keeping communication lines open for families.

Let’s work together to find a solution that supports both education and communication.
