The Issue

Our future is at stake, and the system meant to evaluate our hard work should not be the reason for us to worry. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)'s decision to implement the Optical Scan Machine (OSM) system for checking board examination answer sheets has caused significant distress among students, parents, and educators alike. We urge the authorities to reconsider this decision, which is not in the best interests of fairness or accuracy.

The OSM system, while technologically advanced, does not account for the nuances of handwritten answers, essay-based responses, and subjective interpretations that are inherent in many subjects. This mechanical assessment overlooks the human element of education that encourages critical thinking, creativity, and in-depth analysis. These aspects are crucial for nurturing young minds and are often reflected in the handwritten responses that students provide.

Additionally, there have been countless complaints about errors and inaccuracies in the results processed through the OSM system. Such mistakes can have disastrous consequences, not only affecting students' grades but also their college applications and future opportunities. In a system where a single mark can determine the fate of a student's career path, no room for error should be tolerated.

The traditional method of manual checking, although labor-intensive, ensures a more accurate and comprehensive evaluation of student performances. It allows for clarification and reconsideration, where necessary, ensuring that every student's effort is fairly recognized and rewarded. This method has been tried and trusted for years and respects the individuality of each student's work.

We understand the need for modernization and efficiency, but not at the expense of fairness and students' futures. There are alternative solutions that can improve efficiency without compromising on the quality of evaluation, such as hybrid systems combining machine scanning for objective questions and manual checking for subjective ones.

Let us protect future generations from the pitfalls of a flawed system. We call on CBSE to halt the use of the OSM system for checking board examination answer sheets and to return to more reliable and trusted methods of evaluation. Our education system should be a source of inspiration and encouragement, not a cause for anxiety and despair.
