The Issue

Petition to Oppose Carbon Capture Storage Projects in Newton County and Jasper County, Texas

We, the undersigned residents and supporters of Newton and Jasper Counties, oppose the approval, permitting, or development of any carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects within our counties.

Growing interest in CCS activity across Southeast Texas has raised serious concerns about groundwater protection, seismic risks, long‑term environmental impacts, and the lack of transparent public engagement. These concerns apply equally to both Newton County and Jasper County, where rural communities depend on clean water, stable land, and responsible land‑use decisions.

We call on the Newton County Commissioners Court, the Jasper County Commissioners Court, the County Judges of both counties, and all relevant state and federal agencies to:

Reject any applications for CCS injection wells or storage sites in Newton or Jasper County.

Require independent environmental and geological assessments before considering any future proposals.

Hold public hearings that allow residents to ask questions and receive clear, unbiased information.

Our counties deserve development that protects our land, our water, our property, and our future. We urge our elected officials to take a stand for the safety and well‑being of our communities.

We respectfully request immediate action to prevent CCS projects from moving forward in Newton and Jasper Counties.

Your title says it all stop carbon capture storage. I’m not for any chemicals going in our water probably wouldn’t affect me, but our youth is the future and they’re the ones I’m concerned about. Thank you. Note: The Change.org Civic Engagement Team reaches out to decision makers to let them know about petitions in their community and to help facilitate engagement with supporters. The above was an email response we received regarding this petition.
