Canyon Springs (CS) Church has been renting space at our local middle school in the Scripps Ranch area, Marshall Middle School for many years. In the recent months Canyon Springs has outwardly endorsed hate speech, hate rhetoric and discrimination toward the LGBTQIA+ community specifically, in addition to religious sects. 

In January 2023 Canyon Springs Church put a large banner directly across the street from Marshall Middle School for all the students to see that said something to the effect of “Want to learn/understand more about Gender? Come to Canyon Springs Church on February 5th.” The sign seemed somewhat endearing, maybe even helpful. It turned out to be anything but helpful!

Patti says she is a “former” lesbian whom claims that Jesus saved her from this “sinful lifestyle.” Patti’s sermon was given at the local Middle School’s theatre this past Sunday, that was in front of about 100 people, some children. Her message continued to speak about there being no place for anyone in heaven that is homosexual, Muslim or Buddhist. Her words are incredible damaging and devastating to the LGBTQIA+ community and other religious communities. 

Patti Height and Canyon Springs Church should not be allowed to have hate speeches on school grounds at any time. Our community and our students deserve a safe space at all times, during and outside of school hours. Our schools are not the place for hate rhetoric and hate speech. 

Demand that SDUSD CANCEL their contract with Canyon Springs Church IMMEDIATELY citing hate speech and discrimination against the LGBTQIA+ community and religious groups.
