The Issue

At our school, making us have our recess inside on rainy days is just not working. For middle schoolers in particular, we only get one nineteen minute recess per day already. This is our time to get our energy out and get fresh air. The only reason why recess should be canceled is if it is literally flooding outside or thunder and lightning, etc. A bit of rain and wind is just normal weather, and people should learn that we can handle it. Here in Portland, Oregon, we have grown up with this kind of weather. Spending nineteen minutes outside, even in bad weather, is doable. However, school administration just doesn't seem to understand why it is not okay to strip us of our only bit of freedom each day. When recess is canceled and moved indoors (not even to the school gym; inside of classrooms that we already spend the rest of our day in), our lives are negatively impacted in many ways. The social aspect of indoor recess is limited. With so much unused energy, students are restless and hyperactive. There are emotional damages as well. Students who don't get all of the things that outdoor recess can become frustrated and depressed, leading to unhappy classrooms. At least give us the option to go outside on rainy days. Please help change the errors of Laurelhurst School by signing this petition.
