The Issue

As a California native and veteran, I've always prided myself on the Golden State's legendary innovation, beauty, and pioneering spirit. However, I now find myself increasingly burdened by what feels like a systematic financial imposition on us, its citizens. Our state government seems to have lost sight of fairness and equity, focusing instead on new ways to tap into our everyday lives and wallets. We need reform today.

To that end, California lawmakers are advancing plans for a mileage-based "Road User Charge" — a per-mile driving tax that would charge residents based exclusively on how far they drive, not how much fuel they use.

Let's review the existing financial demands on California drivers:

- California imposes the highest gas tax in the United States, currently at 61.2 cents per gallon.
- There are additional EV road improvement fees that electric vehicle owners have to contend with.
- High vehicle registration fees, tolls, and fuel sales taxes are already a burden on everyday Californians.

This proposed mileage tax would only exacerbate the financial pressure on residents, particularly those who rely on driving significant distances for work, family obligations, or even medical needs. This tax could have devastating impacts on low-income households and individuals who cannot afford to bear this additional financial strain.

Moreover, the environmental argument for this tax loses traction as electric vehicles make up an ever-growing part of our daily road traffic. It's time for us to seek more balanced and equitable approaches that encourage sustainable practices without financially straining Californians.

Our goal is to prioritize the well-being of California citizens by pushing for reform and innovative solutions. Instead of another taxing measure, we call for investment in public transportation infrastructure, incentives for zero-emission vehicles, and statewide educational campaigns on reducing carbon footprints.

Let's protect our financial futures and inspire our government to find better solutions for all. By signing this petition, you're joining me in urging California lawmakers to halt the implementation of the "Road User Charge" and reconsider the path we're on to create a more equitable system for all Californians. Please sign the petition and help us stop the mileage tax before it starts.
