Caldwell Ave Has Become a Dangerous Speedway
The Issue
As Chicagoans, we have all experienced speed enforcement zones along busy roadways - places where there are schools, parks, and residences. 30 mph zones are enforced citywide for the sake of public safety, and yet there are no speed enforcement cameras to curb rampant speed limit violations at the 6000-6100 N blocks of Caldwell Ave. This is a long stretch of road between the light at Lenox Ave and the stoplight at Cicero, where vehicles and trucks speed at 50-60 mph, and occasionally 70-80mph. The high speeds create a dangerous environment for anyone turning onto Caldwell from Leggett Ave. and Leader Ave. in both directions. Neighbors can recount numerous collisions—including one that ended in the death of a young man, whose motorcycle collided with a turning SUV in the middle of the afternoon.
Furthermore, the construction on 90/94 has rerouted enormous cargo and semi trucks up and down Caldwell Ave, often speeding, thus creating a noisy and highway like environment for residents.
There is no reason for the speeding. The on ramp for 90/94 has a 30mph limit, and there is speed enforcement at the intersection of Cicero and Peterson ave. The current design allows speeding only along Caldwell Ave.
We need accountability for reckless driving in our neighborhood. For the sake of peace, the safety of our children, and our elderly neighbors, please ask Samantha Nugent and the 39th Ward to install speed enforcement cameras from Lenox Ave to the 90/94 East ramp.
Speed enforcement factors:
1. There is an observed increase in traffic and speeding between the light at Lenox Ave and the Caldwell 90/94 on ramp. The employment of speed enforcement cameras can help to raise funds for the ward and city due to the high volume of motorists.
2. There is an observed increase in the number of large commercial trucks that speed and create high decibel noise and seismic activity. The employment of speed enforcement cameras can help to mitigate the disturbance.
3. The employment of cameras should be installed in such a way that the frequent flash from the camera does not disturb the homes along Caldwell Ave. The neighbors elect that the cameras are absent of a flash, otherwise that the angle does not disturb the residences in its vicinity.
