The Issue

Are you fed up with traffic queues into Barnstaple? Children in Yelland and Fremington are having to wake up at unreasonably early hours, sometimes as early as 6AM, just to catch a school bus by 7:30 AM. With over 800 additional houses yet to be built, pupils will be leaving earlier and earlier. This arduous routine leads to tiredness, affects their focus in school, and causes unacceptable stress,  particularly during important exam periods. Recently, it's been reported that some pupils have missed their GCSE exams due to traffic delays. This is not just a minor inconvenience; it's a significant disruption to their education and future aspirations.

The root of this issue lies in the constant construction of new housing developments along the B3233, a vital route into Barnstaple. This increased housing results in more vehicles, exacerbating the traffic congestion significantly. The council's inaction in addressing these congestions is becoming intolerable as it affects not only students but also working citizens. Many are finding themselves late for work, which has a ripple effect on their livelihood and well-being.

The local council must take immediate and effective action to alleviate this dire situation. A moratorium on new housing developments in the area should be considered until proper infrastructure and traffic flow improvements are put in place. Implementing measures such as enhanced public transport options, staggered school start times, or constructing alternative routes could greatly mitigate the issue at hand.

Local government owes it to its citizens, both young and old, to provide an environment where the quality of life is not compromised by unchecked urban expansion. I urge the council to prioritize the needs of current residents by addressing traffic congestion without further delay.

Sign this petition to demand the immediate suspension of new housing developments until effective traffic solutions are implemented.
