The Issue

Domestic violence comes in many different forms. It can be physical, emotional, and verbal abuse. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) statistics, "nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. During one year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men."

Domestic abuse can be hard to get away from since they can be financially dependent on their abuser and could have developed trauma bonding which can make it harder for them to leave. Also the American Bar Association (ABA) has stated that, "38 percent of all domestic violence victims become homeless at some point in their lifetime." Domestic violence shelters are important since they can provide a safe and nurturing environment for victims. Shelters hold a safe space where they will be away from their abuser but where they can also get the therapy and legal guidance they need. However according to an article on CALMATTERS , "The federal funding that pays for the services has been on the decline, prompting Congress to restrict the amount of money distributed to the states."

This petition has been created to advocate for domestic violence survivors. We want to ensure that the government does not decrease the funds being provided for shelters for domestic violence survivors. By signing this petition you can show your support.
