The Issue

Growing up in the Gresham-Barlow School District, programs like AVID and music education played a significant role in shaping my academic journey and personal development. I have seen firsthand how these programs ignite passion and drive in students, providing essential skills that enhance their academic performance and personal growth. For many students, these programs are not just extracurricular activities, but vital components of their education that foster creativity, discipline, and critical thinking.

Unfortunately, the current budget cuts threaten to dismantle these invaluable programs. They are not just numbers on a spreadsheet; they represent real opportunities for students to discover their talents and unlock their potentials. The skills learned in AVID programs and music classes have long-term benefits, including improved academic performance, enhanced social skills, and increased college and career readiness. For instance, studies have shown that students involved in music education score higher in math and reading, and those in AVID programs are more likely to succeed in high school and attend college.

It is crucial for the Gresham-Barlow School District board to reconsider these budget cuts. Instead of eliminating these programs, we should be investing in them as they are key to providing a well-rounded education. There are alternative solutions that can be explored, such as seeking additional funding from grants, reallocating existing resources more efficiently, and engaging the community in fundraising efforts.

By preserving and strengthening AVID and music education, we are investing in our future leaders and community contributors. These programs offer the hope and promise that every student deserves. We need to stand together and make our voices heard to protect the educational opportunities that our students so desperately need.

Please join me in urging the Gresham-Barlow School District board to stop these budget cuts and keep AVID and music education thriving in our schools. Sign this petition and support our students' right to a comprehensive and enriching education.
