The Issue

I am writing this petition because I am deeply concerned about Buchtel High School's policy of confiscating students' cell phones and devices. For us students, our phones are vital tools, not only for communication but also for emergency situations. Imagine if there was an emergency, and we had no way to contact our families simply because the school had taken our phones away.

At Buchtel HS, it's not just a matter of inconvenience. Our personal devices are often misplaced by the school, and retrieving them becomes a cumbersome task. Those of us with jobs need to leave school early or right after classes to get to work on time, but are forced to stand in long lines just to get our phones back. This policy hinders our ability to manage our time efficiently and adds unnecessary stress to our already busy lives.

We understand the school's intent to avoid distractions during classes, but this blanket policy does not cater to our individual needs or responsibilities outside school hours. There should be a balance between maintaining discipline and respecting the personal needs of students. Alternatives, like setting specific times when phone use is permitted, or ensuring that phones are accessible in emergencies, should be considered.

We respectfully urge the administration of Buchtel High School to revisit this policy. Let us work together to find a solution that respects both the rules of the school and the responsibilities of the students. Please sign this petition to support a more balanced approach that keeps our phones accessible when truly needed.

“Greetings, I am a school board member who has served since 2020. In 2023. The teacher union shared with the board, that cellphone use has been a huge distraction in the classrooms, despite having a policy in place that restricted them. Teachers were not comfortable enforcing the policy for various reasons and asked the board to consider an investment in the yonder pouches. I personally talked to several groups of students who disagreed. I attempted to share the reality of many classroom environments, as reported by teachers. The pouches were implemented however and I have recieved updates that there is improvement and more focus, even though students have figured out, how to open the pouches. In 2024, the governor of Ohio, signed in to law,,the banning of cellphones in public schools, with certain exceptions for approved health and emergency reasons. The petition request is asking the school board to break Ohio law. We simply cannot do that. However if there is a true health or emergency, that can be accommodated by speaking with building leaders (principal). Students can write out state representatives and the governor with their request, as they hold the power to change the law. Students can also research how to lead a petition to get the issue on the ballot to be decided by voters. Diana Autry”
