The Issue

As a concerned parent, I am deeply troubled by the frequency with which alarming acts of sexual and physical violence are broadcasted on radio and television, particularly during times when our children are likely to be listening. During school runs and other times when children are exposed to media, they are confronted with discussions of rape, stabbing, and other violent acts, which are inappropriate for their young ears.

Every morning, like many parents, I find myself grappling with these complex topics, forced into conversations that my children are not yet ready to fully comprehend. This is not just my concern; it's a sentiment shared by numerous other parents who believe that such content should not be normalized or made to seem like a frequent occurrence in daily life.

In the UK, where there are already regulations for the timing of explicit content, we need to apply the same consideration to news segments. A watershed hour for violent news coverage, similar to the one in place for swearing or adult situations, could be a practical solution. By scheduling these discussions to times when children are less likely to be listening, we protect their innocence and allow them to experience media without fear or confusion.

Statistics have shown that exposure to violent content can have detrimental effects on young minds, fostering fear and normalization of violence. According to a report by the American Academy of Pediatrics, children who are exposed to media violence can become desensitized to violence, aggressive, and fearful of the world around them.

We understand the importance of news in keeping the public informed, but it is crucial that we balance this need with the responsibility of safeguarding our children's mental and emotional wellbeing. Let's petition broadcasters to reevaluate their programming schedule and instate a watershed for news that involves violence, to protect our children from premature exposure that could have lasting impacts on their development.

Sign this petition to urge media outlets to implement a responsible broadcasting policy that considers the safety and sensitivity of our children. Together, we can create a safer listening environment for our young ones.
