WE THE UNDERSIGNED WANT MICHIGAN ANTI CRUELTY SOCIETY TO NOT ACCEPT STRAY ANIMALS THAT THEY WILL EUTHANIZE, unless immediately medically necessary.
Michigan Anti Cruelty Society is a 501c3 non-profit Animal Shelter that euthanizes animals based on Breed. They discriminate against pitbulls and other large breed dogs. They accept these breeds but refuse to adopt them. Michigan Anti Cruelty Society has been using euthanasia as a form of population control.
Michigan Anti Cruelty Society has admittedly labeled dogs as aggressive due to personal fears of pitbull and other large breed dogs.
Detroit city ordinances state that stray dogs within the city of Detroit fall under the jurisdiction of Detroit Animal Control. However, non-profit corporations (such as Michigan Anti Cruelty Society) are permitted to pick up dogs to shelter them or sell (adopt) them; the ordinance does not give the authority to destroy stray dogs to any other organization but Detroit Animal Control.
Sec. 6-2-7. - Treatment of stray dogs.
(a) The Animal Control Division is authorized to capture and impound any stray dog that is on public property and to return, sell, transfer, or euthanize any such animal in accordance with this chapter.
(b) It shall be the duty of all persons to immediately notify the Animal Control Division regarding any stray dog under their control and, upon request, to turn over any stray dog to the Animal Control Division. The Animal Control Division shall impound, register, and promptly notify the owner of the dog, if any, at his or her last known address.
(c) It shall be unlawful for any person to harbor, hold, or keep for reward any dog which has strayed upon the premises or property of such person, or has been picked up on a public highway or other public place unaccompanied by its owner, or has been stolen from the owner.
(d) It shall be unlawful for any person other than the owner to procure a license for any dog which has strayed upon the premises or property of such person, or has been picked up on a public highway or other public place unaccompanied by its owner, or has been stolen from the owner.
(e) The provisions of this section prohibiting the harboring, holding, or keeping and licensing a stray dog shall not apply to any nonprofit corporation that is organized for the purpose of sheltering dogs or to a legal purchaser of a dog from such organization.
All stray dogs that non-profit corporations pick up (who will be euthanized for anything other than immediately medically necessary) should be turned in to Detroit Animal Control where they have trainers on staff that are better qualified to make an educated decision on each individual dog. Thousands of healthy, friendly, adoptable animals are euthanized at Michigan Anti Cruelty Society each year when rescue groups are denied the option of helping these animals be adopted.
