Stop Breed Discrimination at Wilson County Animal Shelter

Stop Breed Discrimination at Wilson County Animal Shelter
The Issue
As someone who passionately advocates for pit bulls, it pains me to see the unjust treatment these dogs receive at our local animal shelter in Wilson, NC. Pits and pit mixes are unfairly labeled as unadoptable to the public, yet other potentially aggressive breeds such as German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Dobermans, Belgian Malinois, and Chows are available for adoption. This discriminatory policy means that many pits are only eligible for adoption through rescues or a previous owner reclaim. This bias often results in an increased euthanization rate for these dogs, not due to their behavior, but simply because of their breed.
The perpetuation of negative stereotypes about pit bulls deprives them of the second chance all dogs deserve. Numerous studies and experts, including those from the American Veterinary Medical Association, have affirmed that no specific breed is inherently more dangerous than another. Dogs' behavior is primarily a reflection of their upbringing and environment, not their genetics. By preventing pits from being publicly adoptable, we are not only denying them a chance at finding loving homes but also affirming baseless fears and misconceptions.
Consider the story of Bossman, a pit bull mix who was euthanized 5/15/25 because of this policy. He was said to be someone's dog...very friendly towards people and other dogs. With no suitable rescue stepping forward quickly enough he lost his life! There are countless lovable pits waiting for their rightful chance to be loved and cherished!!
I call on Wilson officials and the management at our local animal shelter: reevaluate this discriminatory policy! Let's work towards integrating fair adoption practices allowing pits to be equally adoptable, ensuring they have a fair shot at life. Every dog deserves the opportunity to live in a safe and caring home.
Please lend your voice to this important cause. Sign this petition today to enact change and give pit bulls the chance they deserve in Wilson, NC. Together, we can be the voice for these voiceless animals and pave the way for a more inclusive and fair adoption process. Every signature counts in the fight against breed discrimination. Sign to make a difference!
