Here Senator Zuiderveld talks about HB314 which was vetoed by governor Brad Little for its “unintended consequences for Idaho libraries and their patrons.” In this Zuiderveld does say some truth about the bill, before going on to say that if it was up to her, LIBRARIANS WOULD BE ARRESTED for checking out “obscene” books to children. 

While in concept this sounds fine, It’s not a librarians job to memorize every book containing obscene material, but it is a parent’s job to monitor what their kid is reading. Here is the primary reasons the bill wasn’t passed:

-HB314 is incredibly ambiguous on what could be “harmful to children”
-Libraries such as the @twinfallspubliclibrary have stated that if this bill where to pass CHILDREN WOULD NO LONGER BE ABLE TO HAVE PUBLIC LIBRARY CARDS as it would be way too much of a liability for the library which could incur hefty fines.

Taking away their library cards would disenfranchise many lower income kids who are interested in reading as they would have to be accompanied by an adult to check out any book, including children’s books.
