Stop Blue Origin from dumping waste into Indian River Lagoon
The Issue
As a resident of Cape Canaveral, I deeply care about the health and preservation of the Indian River Lagoon—a place where my family and I live, eat, swim, and fish. Over the years, the community and I have worked tirelessly to restore the lagoon to its natural glory. We have invested in cleanup initiatives and taken significant measures to limit harmful runoff from pesticides and fertilizers. The consideration of allowing Blue Origin to dump waste water into the lagoon stands as a direct threat to these efforts and is ethically unacceptable.
The Indian River Lagoon is a federally protected zone, signifying its ecological and environmental importance. It has been designated as an Estuary of National Significance by the Environmental Protection Agency, containing diverse species of plants and animals, some of which are endangered. We cannot afford to jeopardize this sanctuary with waste water. Recent studies reveal that waste water discharge can lead to harmful algal blooms, oxygen depletion, and long-term ecological damage which could take decades to repair.
Moreover, Blue Origin is pushing to fast-track their agenda through the influence of tax dollars without adequately addressing community concerns or vetting necessary permits. Transparency and careful consideration must be the foundation of any decision affecting our environment. This is not an issue that should be influenced by corporate interests, especially in a region already bearing significant environmental strain from existing industries like SpaceX and cruise operations.
There are viable alternative solutions. Technologies and sustainable engineering practices provide opportunities for Blue Origin to manage its waste without compromising an ecosystem we hold dear. Investment in advanced treatment facilities, waste reclamation projects, and more environmentally sound disposal methods can prevent disaster in the lagoon without halting industry progress.
We urge environmental oversight agencies, local and federal representatives, and Blue Origin's leadership to halt any plans that involve waste discharge into the Indian River Lagoon. Our lagoon's health is invaluable, and we must prioritize preserving this irreplaceable habitat for future generations.
Join us in protecting our lagoon by signing this petition. Let's hold Blue Origin accountable for sustainable practices and ensure the safeguarding of our cherished environment.
