Stop Bincote Road Bus Stops and Congestion

The Issue

Once a quiet, leafy, suburban street, Bincote road was renowned for its beautiful blossom-tree lined grass verges. Today unfortunately the same cannot be said.

The stealthy introduction of 2 additional bus routes to this small quiet road, by  TFL and Enfield Council has massively impacted the overall appearance and functionality of the area that it is hardly recognisable.

The area was already well served by 4 bus routes which did not affect the small secondary roads nearby. This all changed when TFL and Enfield Council introduced the 456 and 377 busses. Although largely opposed to these new routes assurances by ENFIELD council that measures would be employed and that impact would be minimal reassured residents. Sadly the truth was very different. Now, not only have TFL and Enfield Council created chaos in this once leafy suburban part of western Enfield, but they are doubling down by trying to introduce 2 additional Bus Stops in Bincote road itself.

As it stands the immediate area is home to 3 large schools and 3 nursery’s which combined equates to approximately 3000 children daily and all of the schools are situates on the same 400m stretch of road. Monday to Friday thousands of cars, school children and parents flood this small area, and yet TFL and Enfield Council have provided NO special measures to deal with the influx. There are NO traffic calming measures, NO safety measures for children and pedestrians and NO enforcement by Police or Wardens ensuring road traffic laws are adhered to, nothing.

Instead of trying to reduce congestion and the daily chaos experienced, TFL and Enfield Council have decided to further add to the appalling traffic by creating 2 bus stops in the very road plagued by gridlock traffic, road-rage, kerb mounting and other criminal acts, many against local residents.

Bincote road made the National Press recently when footage of cars driving on pavements emerged. Face-offs between busses and car drivers, verbal and physical threats of violence, anti-social behaviour and terrified children and parents walking their kids to school, were all reported but to no avail. (Please see the links below)

Instead of reducing the chaos or trying to address it TFL and Enfield Council are planning to add to it. Some believe that TFL and Enfield Council will eventually try to widen the road by removing or drastically reducing the grass verges, and justify the removal of the trees by citing the very traffic chaos they have created and not addressed.

It is for this reason that the local Residents Association  has attempted to take action, both with  TFL and Enfield Council. Meetings with local councillors from Enfield council present were held by the Residents Association, Senior Engineer for Traffic and Transportation was also present. At these meetings the association requested Environmental impact assessments but these were never provided and believed not to exist. Freedom of Information requests were also made to Enfield Council and TFL over the last 18 months, without a single reply. Since the last meeting, the association provided evidence of the opposition to the proposed bus stops, and although a further meeting was agreed by all and due to take place, Enfield Council engineers have now been advised by senior management not to engage.

It appears as though TFL and Enfield Council have no regard for the wishes and concerns of the tax payers whom they are supposed to represent and serve.

Instead It appears that TFL and Enfield Council have little regard for congestion, pollution, environmental impact, anti-social and criminal behaviour, or the safety of school children and the elderly who live  in the areas.  The only time this seems to be a concern is when it involves generating income by increasing increasing council tax and travel fares.

Please support this petition not just for the local residents but for everyone everywhere trying to protect their neighbourhoods.
