Satya Shanmugaselvam, The Humanitarian Project started this petition to Governors office Governer Northam

I am a seventh-grader from Richmond VA. And I have noticed that supermarket chains like Wegmans and Publix have been throwing excess food of perfectly good quality for years. I have always believed in helping everyone and many people, especially during the pandemic, have gone hungry. Additionally, all of this wastage of food dumped into landfills contributes to global warming. In the bigger picture, supermarkets have hundreds of locations which mean thousands of pizzas and other meals being thrown out every single day when it could go to someone in need. If all of this food can be packaged and redistributed to the homeless instead of being thrown out, we could feed thousands. This is a way the big supermarket chains can stop wasting money on wasted food and help people who need it most. I have seen firsthand in which Wegmans and Publix employees throw out perfectly fine pizzas into the garbage that were a little cold in times when people were not visiting the store. I want to change all of this and bring awareness to this waste, holding supermarkets accountable. My local Wegmans makes so much money. If they could just use a small number of their profits to stop wasting food, my city could be able to feed many homeless individuals with a warm meal for days. If you sign my petition you will be part of a movement and idea to end food insecurity in my state of Virginia and then the United States of America. My mission is to influence my state and local representatives to make a change in our communities.
