Stop BESS - Lithium Battery Storage installation near our homes and bays
The Issue
The residents of Hampton Bays and surrounding areas are deeply concerned and opposed to the proposed Canal Southampton BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) project on North Road. This would be a huge facility consisting of 30 tractor trailer sized units containing 24 lithium batteries in each trailer. We are petitioning to demand the Town of Southampton put a halt to this project. Consider the following:
- This does not belong in any residential area - the closest home is less than 400 feet away. (Click HERE and go to page 8 of the application for details of the surrounding neighborhoods.)
- This does not belong near any recreational areas such as the Shinnecock Canal and Meschutt Beach - the Canal is less than 800 feet away.
- BESS lithium battery facilities are known to have fire risks.
- BESS lithium battery facilities are known to have air and ground polluting hazards.
- In the event of fire, the location is at a narrow choke point on the East End, where Sunrise, North Road, Montauk Hwy and the LIRR all meet - evacuation would be impossible.
- In the event of fire, runoff will leach into the ground and run into the Shinnecock Canal polluting the canal and bay waters and polluting the air. Wildlife and sea life will be harmed or destroyed.
- There will be noise pollution to the surrounding area.
- Once a BESS is installed in a residential community, the precedent is set; a BESS can be installed in any residential area.
- Finding better energy solutions is imperative, but not if it compromises or threatens the residents and ecosystem of the town of Southampton. Finding the correct location is also imperative!
