The Issue

Golf For All Limited have been operating Solent Meads Golf Course since 2003, it is leased from BCP, the local authority in Bournemouth.

BCP wish to close this much loved facility at the end of the current lease in November 2026. This is despite having no plans what to do with the site in the future.

Solent Meads Golf Course opened in 1961 and was operated by the local authority until 2003. If you are/were from Bournemouth and play golf you probably started out at Solent Meads Golf Course. Being open space, the area is also enjoyed by walkers, dog owners and visitors.

Golf For All Limited have improved the aesthetics and condition of the course over the years, creating definition and outstanding greens. All standards and all ages play the course, from beginner to professional, many local but also from afar.

Golf For All Limited have shaped the course with biodiversity in mind, introducing rough and allowing much of the course to grow wild. Due to this, the course has created natural habitats for diverse wildlife, including ground nesting birds and adders. Long gone are the days the local authority blanket cut the whole of the course very short once a week. Recently, BCP conducted an ecology survey of the site, Solent Meads Golf Course was commended for its nature, habitats and biodiversity.

Golf For All Limited have turned Solent Meads Golf Course into a viable business, a total reversal from when they took it over from the local authority. Golf For All Limited have paid hundreds of thousands of pounds in rent to BCP during their 22 year tenure, funds you would think BCP would welcome and cherish considering the financial situation they find themselves in today.

Golf is a fantastic sport and past time. It can be played by all ages and is one of the few sports individuals of mixed abilities can play together. It is truly a game for life and has an endless amount of personal benefits, studies have shown it can even increase your life expectancy!

Solent Meads Golf Course is not just a place to play golf but a community hub and a sanctuary for some, it fosters social interactions, combating loneliness and promotes both physical and mental wellbeing. It would be a huge loss for Southbourne, Bournemouth, Christchurch and beyond.

Other golf courses in the area could also face the same fate once their leases expire, this includes Iford, Meyrick Park and Queens Park. This is not just a petition to save Solent Meads Golf Course, but a petition to save golf in Bournemouth.

Golf For All Limited believe Solent Meads Golf Course should stay open and remain a golf course, whether they are the future custodian or it happens to be another golf operator taking over the reins.

We have been informed that we require 2000 signatures for the future of Solent Meads Golf Course to be properly debated by councillors. We have surpassed that with ease in less than 36 hours. Please still support the petition and let’s get to 10,000! Please sign this petition and help save Solent Meads Golf Course and golf in Bournemouth.
