The open house session last week received mixed impressions. In summary this location was chosen because the land was for sale. BC Housing states there is an urgent need for this type of housing because it’s in short supply. It is also because the development is a 15 minute walk to New View Society’s club house where residents can access services. Also, they recognize this site is close to amenities many local residences enjoy. They estimate construction to start before Spring 2026 and indicate they will share communications with neighbours throughout the process. A generalized description of the residents was provided, indicating they have mental health conditions, are able to live independently, are low income adults at risk of homelessness and would commit to receiving mental supports. Our thoughts:

The location was chosen disregarding the type of demographics that live in the area which include young families and seniors and strongly feel the safety and peace of others was not considered. In regards to the assessment process, when asked how independent living was defined , answers were not provided nor was the detailed interview process. Many details were obscured by generalizations and not specifics. We did not learn how they would reassure the safety of the community; the plan is to "wait and see." BC Housing reiterates New View Society’s 50 years of experience, noting they have never received complaints without providing evidence of how well they operate. There are concerns about the purpose of a 24/7 staffed building which is unlike other buildings managed by New View Society. Overall, the lack of transparency did not provide the community confidence about the who the tenants will be and how the building will operate.

Many residents who attended the open house are unaware of this petition. We would like as many people to be aware of this so please continue to spread the word. Please place these in your apartment notice board area, cars or simply hand them out to your neighbours.
