Stop BC Ferries from increasing reservation capacity and give residents priority boarding

Stop BC Ferries from increasing reservation capacity and give residents priority boarding
The Issue
For residents of the Sunshine Coast, BC Ferries is more than just a mode of transportation. It is our highway, our lifeline that connects us to vital resources, family, and work opportunities on the mainland. Unfortunately, the recent decision by BC Ferries to increase reservation capacities is forcing locals to pay extra fees and book in advance to secure a spot on the ferry. This has made it increasingly difficult for residents to travel, and is putting unnecessary financial strain on our community.
BC Ferries' current system is unsustainable and overlooks the needs of local residents. We demand a fair allocation of boarding: 50% of ferry capacity should be reserved for residents, ensuring we can access the services and supplies we depend upon. In addition, 40% of spaces should remain available for reservations, catering to tourists and other travelers, while the remaining 10% must be allocated to the transportation of essential goods and services.
Further, both residents and those with reservations must be present at the terminal at least 30 minutes before departure to ease boarding processes and ensure efficiency.
Our community feels held hostage by current practices, and it's time for BC Ferries to acknowledge and address our concerns. The financial gouging of locals must stop. Priority boarding for Sunshine Coast residents will help prevent delays and ensure that our daily and essential travel needs are met without having to sacrifice disproportionate amounts of time and money.
We're asking BC Ferries and local government to listen to our plea and implement this equitable ferry boarding policy that respects the rights and needs of Sunshine Coast residents. Sign this petition to demand change and reinstate fairness for our community.
