Stop banning dog breeds - introduce a law with set guidelines for dog owners

The Issue

Stop banning the dog breeds and instead introduce a law which gives set guidelines for dog owners so that they’re held accountable for their dog’s actions.

It’s understandable that there is this increase in fear following all the news articles on American XL Bulldogs, but it isn’t just the dog’s fault, it’s the neglectful owner who failed to train the dog, failed to maintain the behaviour of the dog in a public area and failed to keep the dog on a lead, yet there is nothing in the news about the owners.

ANY dog can be dangerous if they’re not trained properly or handled correctly when in public. So why are we banning just one breed? It’s understandable you might hate the breed XL bulldogs because of stories or personal experiences but then this ban will cause so many heartbreaks and take away a lot of family pets who have put in the effort to train them.

Banning the dog breeds will just be a continuous loop. So instead of banning them create a law which gives dog owners a set guideline and if the dog doesn’t follow these guide lines then the owner and the dog should be held accountable.

These guidelines could be something like:

  • Dogs must be walked on a lead at all times, unless in an empty area or training with recall is completely sufficient.
  • If a dog isn’t friendly around other dogs/people then this dog should be kept on a lead at all times.
  • Dogs which are deemed as dangerous must attend obedience training and socialising training etc.

And if any of these guidelines aren’t followed and as a result a dog is to attack then the owner should be prosecuted for neglect and endangering others along with the dog going through further training and if the dog is deemed dangerous after the training then it should be seized.

A dog isn’t dangerous because of its breed, it’s the neglect and poor training from the owner.
