Let’s enjoy posting authentic languages on our Facebook. 

In this age of IT, it is important that we Karen people do not fall behind. In order to do that, let’s stop using the Zawgyi system but instead switch to the Unicode system.

Have you ever encountered issues when writing Karen on Facebook, such as the text doesn’t display correctly? Have you ever faced issues when reading and writing Karen language online, where what you type doesn’t appear as intended?

The main reason why these problems are occurring is due to the Zawgyi system. Before diving further into these issues, let me explain a bit about what Unicode is.

What is Unicode?

Unicode is a character encoding system designed to unify the writing systems of all languages under one standard. It systematically defines the script and characters of each language, allowing for consistent and accurate writing.

Why should we use Unicode?

Using Unicode ensures that your language's script and writing system are accurately and systematically defined. It allows for easy use on platforms like Google, Facebook, Wikipedia, Microsoft, Android, and iOS. This accessibility means you can search for necessary information on the internet without language barriers, enriching your knowledge and improving your abilities. Furthermore, it enables the extensive use of books, research papers, educational materials, and entertainment in your language online, greatly benefiting language development and dissemination.

Having explained Unicode, let's address why Karen text on Facebook doesn't display correctly.

From October 1, 2019, Myanmar officially adopted the Unicode standard. However, as some users still use Zawgyi while others use Unicode, Facebook has implemented a system to automatically convert Zawgyi to Unicode. However, as a result, Karen text written using Unicode appears incorrectly on Facebook, as it gets converted to Zawgyi format.

What can we do to ensure Karen text displays correctly on Facebook?

To accurately display Karen text using Unicode, we need to request Facebook to remove the automatic conversion from Zawgyi to Unicode. Hence, we encourage everyone to join together in using Unicode to ensure the correct representation of Karen text.

We are facing a display problem when writing Karen languages on Facebook. Other ethnic groups in Myanmar like Shan and Mon are able to write their language on Facebook and other platforms very coherently. Thus, the Facebook team needs to stop the Zawgyi to Unicode auto converter.
