Media has not yet reported the demolition of the historic house at 51 Tannery St. Mississauga that began on March 3, 2025. What can best be described as a tragic demolition by ambush took place on the same day as a City Planning meeting for the property and surrounding land. This petition was also forwarded to City of Mississauga application info. and to Mayor Carolyn Parrish ahead of the meeting.
A case conference at the Ontario Land Tribunal took place the next day on March 4, 2025 for an appeal brought by NYX Tannery LP as the City had withheld making a decision on the development. A call to City by-law was made at the start of demolition on March 3, 2025. City staff indicated someone would “look into” it. Various calls to authorities were made due to:
- Lack of a current demolition permit being visibly posted at 51 Tannery
- A man driving a demolition truck from " Eddies" being asked to produce a current active demolition permit after he started demolishing a small part of the house but refused to produce one
- City of Mississauga property information on the City's website still shows as of March 11, 2025, the historic house at 51 Tannery St. was demolished Oct. 24, 2019 and "ALL INSP SIGNED OFF" more than six years ago.
During the City meeting on March 3, 2025 a photograph of the house at 51 Tannery was presented to City Council as still standing by a City planner. City Council was then informed after that presentation that the main body of the house was still standing at 51 Tannery, but demolition had begun, damaging a portion of the side of the building earlier in the day. Demolition stopped a few hours before the City meeting after authorities were called. The City Council indicated after hearing this news, building and planning was going to look into it.

The next day on March 4, 2025, the "Eddie's" truck driver hastily proceeded to continue demolishing all of the historic house at 51 Tannery St. and thereafter. On March 4, 2025, “Insauga” reported that residents oppose the development and the article showed the house as still standing onsite:

What was on the land at 51 Tannery has been fundamentally changed by this demolition. It appears to be an attempt to force a development proposal before approval, while apparently an attack on affordable housing.
There is much more to this story. Ultimately the demolition is detrimental to freedom of expression, public debate and full participation on matters of public interest. Although the City withheld its decision for this recent development proposal, early demolition approvals made by the City for the property at 51 Tannery in 2019 sent an overwhelming message: planning for the property at 51 Tannery was already decided several years prior before any public notices inviting residents to participate went out. Existing protections for these processes and for tenants were not followed.
Earlier research on the heritage value of 51 Tannery presented to the City in 2019 has since been posted at the link below as a memorial: “Remembering 51 Tannery Street: lost to Demolition”
