Introduction: The Three-Times Blindsided Reality

I was fired three times in twelve months.
I’m not lazy. I don't skip shifts, I don't steal, and I didn't fail at my jobs. In fact, every single time I was let go, I was actively working, improving, or following the rules. But under the current "at-will" employment system, none of that matters.

A company can flip your entire life upside down on a random Monday morning for no real reason at all. They expect a two-week notice from you, but they reserve the right to blindside you in an instant. I am sharing my exact stories because I know I am not alone, and it’s time to turn this shared frustration into a structured movement for change.

Job 1: Wayne Combustion Systems (Fort Wayne, IN)

I gave this company three and a half years of loyal service. Their own HR handbook explicitly stated that workers get a progressive three-step write-up process for similar offenses, including a suspension and an action plan to help you fix mistakes. I accidentally misaligned some brass on an order—a mistake, absolutely, but my first real production issue. Instead of following the company's own rules, the COO got personally frustrated, bypassed HR entirely, and fired me on the spot. Three and a half years of loyalty wiped out because an executive had a bad day.

The damage didn’t stop at the factory floor. At the time, I was a straight-A college student working hard to build a better future. When they suddenly ripped my livelihood away, I didn't have the luxury of being choosy or waiting for the perfect opportunity—I am the sole provider for a family of five. I had to take the first job that would put food on the table for my wife and kids, which landed me at Meijer working the 2:00 AM to 10:00 AM shift.

That brutal overnight schedule completely shattered my routine. Because I was exhausted and working those extreme hours just to survive, I missed so much school that my straight-A average plummeted. I failed my classes, had my financial aid completely revoked, and was forced to drop out of college. Critics might argue I "chose" to take that shift, but when you have three kids relying on you, survival isn't a choice. One executive’s whim altered the entire trajectory of my education and my family's life.

Job 2: Everdry Waterproofing (Defiance,Ohio)
I was fired after exactly two weeks and three days. The foreman sat me down and gave me a rehearsed corporate speech: "Here at Everdry, it's the job of the foremen to monitor employee performance over the past month to a month and a half... this job isn't for everyone, nothing personal, but today is your last day." The kicker? The guy saying this had only been my direct supervisor for one single day. They used a fabricated timeline and a scripted speech to cut me loose "just cuz."

Job 3: Insource Technologies (Paulding, Ohio)
This one hurts the most because I did everything right. At my 30-day review, they said I needed improvement. I took that seriously. I sat down with my cell lead, listened to her advice, and took the initiative to write out a personal action plan. I documented my growth and gathered statements from coworkers who saw me improving. On a Friday, I showed the main supervisor my progress and told him I wanted to present my action plan at my 60-day review. He looked me in the eye, smiled, and said he looked forward to seeing me continue to improve.
Less than 72 hours later, on Monday, HR called me in. Those same supervisors went behind my back  to say "it wasn't clicking." Even the HR rep saw my written plan, realized I was doing the work, and tried to get them to reconsider. They refused. They chose management cowardice over honesty.

The Data Behind the Trauma

I bounced back. Every single time, I was able to secure new employment quickly. But your ability to survive a broken system doesn't make the system right. Critics tell us that sudden at-will firing is just a temporary inconvenience, but public health and economic data reveal it is a critical public health hazard:
The Homelessness Domino: A landmark national study by the UCSF Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative (BHHI) found that for a staggering number of everyday workers, sudden job loss is the direct catalyst for immediate housing collapse. Low-wage and manual laborers are routinely "one paycheck away" from crisis, and standard safety nets fail completely when income is cut instantly without warning.

The Invisible Mental Toll: Getting blindsided leaves you with deep, lingering situational anxiety that follows you into the next workplace. After each firing, I found myself walking on eggshells, gripped by a constant, exhausting fear of being let go again. National Institutes of Health (NIH) data confirms that job displacement triggers a 15% to 30% spike in clinical depression and anxiety symptoms. It causes "learned helplessness"—when the law tells you that you can do everything right, build action plans, and still get fired because a boss had a bad weekend, your brain stops believing it has control over its own environment.
The Physical Toll: Data tracked by health researchers reveals that the psychological shock of a sudden layoff leaves permanent scars on the human body. Even when workers secure a new job quickly, they still face a significantly higher onset of chronic, long-term health problems—including heightened risks of cardiovascular disease and diabetes—because human biology remembers the trauma of sudden instability.

What We Are Fighting For (Target Demands)

We are not arguing that bad workers shouldn't be fired. We are arguing for a baseline of economic sanity, corporate accountability, and fundamental citizen rights. We direct our demands to the specific state and federal legislative bodies with the exclusive power to alter these statutes:

Demand Tier 1: State-Level Employment Reform

WE DEMAND THAT THE OHIO GENERAL ASSEMBLY (via the House Commerce and Labor Committee and the Senate Workforce Development Committee) DRAFT AND SPONSOR NEW LEGISLATION ESTABLISHING THE FOLLOWING CODES:

• 1. The Just Cause Standard: Employers must be legally required to provide a documented, legitimate, and performance-based reason prior to terminating an employee. This legislation must mandate clear progressive discipline tracking (such as verbal warnings, written warnings, and constructive performance improvement plans). Unilateral whim firings that bypass a company’s own established HR handbooks must be rendered an actionable breach of labor statute.

• 2. The "Pay or Protect" Safety Net: If corporate lobbies insist on maintaining absolute flexibility to terminate workers without progressive documentation or cause, Ohio law must compel them to absorb the fallout:

 • Mandatory Severance Pay: Any employee terminated without documented just cause must legally receive a minimum baseline of severance pay (e.g., 2 to 4 weeks of pay minimum) to prevent immediate household economic collapse.

 • Guaranteed Unemployment Benefits: If an employer fires a worker without providing a documented progressive disciplinary file to the state, the worker's immediate unemployment benefits must be legally guaranteed without the employer being legally permitted to contest or delay the state claim.

To ensure accountability, localized signature metrics from this petition will be delivered directly to Northwest Ohio's regional representatives, State Rep. Roy Klopfenstein (House District 82) and State Sen. Rob McColley (Senate District 1), forcing them to acknowledge the organizing power of constituents in Paulding County and surrounding areas.

Demand Tier 2: Federal & State Civic Freedom Mandate

WE DEMAND THAT THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS AND THE OHIO GENERAL ASSEMBLY PROTECT THE CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS OF THE AMERICAN WORKFORCE:

State Level Protection: We demand that the Ohio General Assembly expand Ohio Revised Code Chapter 4112 to explicitly include political affiliation and lawful off-duty civic activity as legally protected classes against employment discrimination.

Federal Level Protection: We demand that the U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce introduce legislation to amend Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Exercising fundamental rights as an American citizen outside of working hours—including signing petitions, attending civic gatherings, or organizing non-work campaigns—must be codified as a federally protected class. No American should ever have to choose between their paycheck and their voice.
