STOP ARTIFICIAL TURF AT EAGLE ROCK HIGH SCHOOL
The Issue
As a citizen of the Eagle Rock Neighborhood in Los Angeles, I am extremely concerned and upset about the renovations on the Eagle Rock High School athletic field from natural grass to artificial turf.
Artificial turf provides a multitude of negative side effects, including:
- Plastic pollutants in runoff water
- Chemical leaching from turf sitting in sun
- Harmful toxins within plastic and rubber infill, including PFA’s, and chemicals associated with endocrine disruption and even cancer
- Heat Island Effect
- Unnecessary tree removal
- Water WASTE
- Using unsustainable, unrecyclable materials that are COSTLY to replace in the long run
Furthermore, according to numerous studies, including those by the National Library of Medicine, the Collaborative for Health and Environment, and Cal Matters, turf temperatures can reach up to 170 degrees F on a hot day, and cause severe heat illnesses among athletes. Artificial turf contains a plethora of chemicals including carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, and neurotoxicants, which are extremely harmful to athlete health. Finally, while it is only one of the many environmental impacts, an average athletic artificial turf field uses around 440,000 POUNDS of plastic (rubber infill and turf fibres), which is unrecyclable and nearly impossible to let decompose.
Because of these risks, in signing this petition, we are urging the LAUSD to look towards investing in maintaining the already usable grass field. It is absolutely UNACCEPTABLE to ignore the needs of the Eagle Rock community, especially when it is an established fact that artificial turf has been banned from installation across elementary and middle schools within LAUSD, and is being further investigated in high schools. We are demanding real, natural grass, not plastic turf!
